About Us
The British-Serbian Benevolent Trust is a humanitarian organization based in the UK. The Trust was originally founded as the Serbian Benevolent Society in London in January 1997 and is a continuation of the long history of British philanthropic activities aimed at helping people in Serbia, which started during the First World War.
The Trust is a charity registered with the Charity Commission, the UK government body responsible for overseeing the activities of charities in Great Britain. The Trust’s official registration number is 254179.
Organisation
The Trust is managed by a Board of Trustees, the Chairman of which is Mr Nigel Lubbock and the Vice-Chairman Mr Nikola Babić. The Secretary to the Board is Ms Olga Stanojlović MBE. Members of the Board include the Ambassador of Serbia to the UK and a representative of the Serbian Orthodox Church in London.
Aims and activities
The Trust aims to provide grants for the relief of children resident in Serbia who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress or who are sick, convalescent, disabled, handicapped or infirm, and for promoting the education (including social and physical training) of children resident in Serbia. The upper age limit for those who can be helped is 18, but assistance will also be considered for young people up to the age of 21 if they are in full-time education.
Financial aspects
The Trust derives its income from interest on funds invested with the Charity Commission, and from donations. The average level of grant is £2,000, but this can vary according to need, and larger sums are occasionally approved. Funds are allocated by the Board of Trustees, following the submission of applications.
